To mark our business law firm’s 20th anniversary, I’ll be sharing a weekly series of articles highlighting lessons learned over the past two decades. By transparently reflecting on our journey, from building client relationships to embracing change, I hope to provide perspective applicable beyond the legal industry. This series celebrates a milestone while kickstarting our next chapter as we remain hungry to continue improving and making an impact. I look forward to insights that resonate on this journey down memory lane.
Our Humble Beginnings
It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since I first hung up my shingle straight out of law school to start this firm. We began as a scrappy upstart practice, fueled more by ambition and vision than experience in those early days. Looking back, our modest office space and lack of name recognition presented a real challenge when trying to convincing clients and attorneys to take a chance on us.
But we believed passionately in the unique value we could provide as a young, hungry firm willing to take risks and push boundaries. We set out to build something new that would allow us to better serve clients through innovation and responsiveness.
Slowly but surely, our efforts started to pay off. We began landing clients willing to entrust us with their legal matters, small at first and then increasingly complex. And I was able to recruit well-respected attorneys to leave their comfortable jobs and join me in building something special from the ground up.
Lessons in Trust and Credibility
Those early days taught us invaluable lessons about establishing trust and credibility that still guide us today. As a young firm, we had to appreciate client skepticism and directly address unspoken concerns about our capabilities. Proving ourselves on smaller matters first was key to being entrusted with larger, more sophisticated work.
We found that being readily available, communicating proactively, and maintaining transparency about our processes helped build confidence. Making clients feel heard, understood, and cared for humanized our relationships.
Internally, we learned that extending trust empowered our attorneys to do their best work. But we also had to set standards, knowing when to fire problematic clients who didn’t respect our processes and boundaries.
Above all, we were reminded that patience and humility are essential. We had to check our urgency and let trust develop organically over time.
Evolution of Our Capabilities
Over the past two decades, we’ve been fortunate to expand our capabilities and geographic reach dramatically. We now boast over 40 talented attorneys serving clients across the nation from 5 offices. We offer a full suite of corporate, real estate, litigation, and family legal services.
This growth required us to build an experienced leadership team and institutionalize our processes without losing the agility and personal touch we were founded on. We’ve become adept at leveraging technology to enhance collaboration and efficiency.
Through it all, our commitment to recruiting and developing top talent while fostering a supportive, ethical culture has remained central to our success. We nurture diversity and inclusion as well.
Insights from Crises Navigated
Our journey has not been without obstacles, crises and adversity. From economic recessions to public health emergencies, we’ve navigated our share of choppy waters.
But those difficult stretches provided invaluable learning. Adapting nimbly taught us how to maintain excellent client service and strengthen team unity even in uncertain times.
We instituted flexibility measures like remote work capabilities long before COVID-19 made them standard. This preparedness allowed us to transition smoothly while providing steadfast support clients could rely on.
These experiences reinforced that by staying true to our purpose and coming together, we could persevere through any storm.
Giving Back to the Community
As part of our mission, we believe strongly in giving back to the community that has supported us over the past 20 years. From providing pro bono legal services to volunteering time and resources locally, we aim to make an impact beyond our work.
For example, our attorneys serve on non-profit boards and take on reduced-fee cases for underserved groups. We frequently host legal seminars and networking events as a service for local businesses as well.
Supporting charitable partners, promoting diversity initiatives, and working to expand access to justice are integral parts of our firm’s identity. We are committed to leveraging our skills and platform for the greater good.
Looking Ahead to the Future
While we’re humbled by how far we’ve come in 20 years, we are even more energized for the future ahead. We remain as hungry as ever to continue innovating, adapting, and maximizing our positive impact.
The pace of change in the legal industry shows no signs of slowing down. We are actively preparing the next generation of leaders within our firm to be ready for emerging client needs.
Technological advancements like artificial intelligence and increased automation will undoubtedly continue disrupting traditional legal services. But by embracing innovation, we see opportunity to improve lives through more accessible, affordable counsel.
No matter what changes come, our passion for empowering people and organizations through service-oriented legal excellence remains steadfast. We can’t wait to see what the next 20 years may bring.
