Executive Profile [−]
The Practitioner’s Lens
Cody Steven Riley is a business and intellectual property attorney who serves as outside general counsel to entrepreneurs and growing/established companies alike. A registered patent attorney admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Cody pairs that technical credential with broad, practical business judgment, the kind that comes from advising clients across the full range of issues a company actually faces rather than within a single narrow specialty.
Cody built and continues to run his own practice, so he understands firsthand what it takes to win clients with top notch communication, serve them well, and grow and protect a business. That entrepreneurial perspective shapes how he counsels others. He is responsive, he speaks in plain terms, and he is as comfortable closing a contract as he is enforcing a client’s rights. Clients value having a single trusted lawyer they can call first, whatever the question may be.
Depth Across Business and Intellectual Property
On the business side, Cody advises companies on formation and governance and drafts the commercial agreements that keep them running, including a vast array of agreements such as, master services agreements, online terms and conditions, privacy policies, media releases, non-disclosure agreements, licensing agreements, liability waivers, and warranties. He has also handled general business settlement negotiations and litigation, taking leading roles in mediations, depositions, and trials.
On the intellectual property side, Cody prepares and prosecutes patent, trademark, and copyright applications, manages IP portfolios, and protects his clients’ rights through pre-litigation enforcement, including drafting and responding to cease-and-desist demand letters. True to the firm’s collaborative model, he is the kind of lawyer who can be a client’s or a referral source’s first call on almost any business problem, handling what falls squarely within his wheelhouse and drawing on the wider AEGIS team for the rest.
A Scientist’s Foundation
What sets Cody apart is the scientific fluency beneath his legal work. Before law school he spent years in the life sciences industry as a pharmaceutical account manager and a medical device surgical representative, supporting physicians and clinical staff in the operating room and educating them on treatment protocols. He holds a degree in Biology, completed graduate coursework in bioinformatics at Harvard University, and earned a certificate in HIPAA privacy and security. For founders in life sciences, medical technology, and other technical fields, that background means a lawyer who understands the science as readily as the contracts.
