At a time when tension between the United States and China continues to rise, China claimed a grand victory on January 01, 2022. After seven years in the making, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (“RCEP”), the largest trade deal in history, took effect at the turn of the new year. It encompasses a market of 2.2 billion people, amounting to 30% of the world’s Signatories and includes the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (“ASEAN”), Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, and the Republic of Korea. This Article will first set forth the anticipated benefits of RCEP, and analyzes its impact on the energy industry, particularly in the United States.
